When Casio launched the G-Shock in 1983, it introduced a groundbreaking shock-resistant watch in the now-famous 5000 Series “Square” case. Fast-forward to 2024, and Casio has unveiled the G-Shock DW5000R-1A Origin Revival, a near-exact recreation of that original model with subtle modern enhancements. This update celebrates G-Shock’s legacy while incorporating contemporary materials and improved functionality.

Authentic Construction with a Modern Twist
The original G-Shock featured a stainless steel internal case with a screw-down caseback, a hallmark of its durability. The 2024 DW5000R-1A Origin Revival follows this design faithfully, with a stainless steel inner case and a mirror-polished screw-down caseback. While most modern G-Shocks use resin internal cases, this revival stays true to the original’s robust build, offering a nostalgic yet premium feel.

Slightly Larger, Yet Faithful to the Original
Though the DW5000R-1A’s case size has been slightly increased from 41.6mm to 43.3mm in diameter, the overall design remains nearly identical to the 1983 model. The black soft-resin bezel, four-button layout, and 200-meter water resistance are all retained, maintaining the iconic look and functionality that made the G-Shock a hit decades ago. A brick-pattern dial plate and the signature red, white, yellow, and blue accents further enhance its authenticity.
Sustainable Materials and Comfort
In keeping with Casio’s commitment to sustainability, the DW5000R-1A features bio-based resin for both its strap and bezel. The black rubber strap is designed to match the original, with attention to detail such as the shape, length, and positioning of the dimples. The watch is slightly heavier than typical entry-level G-Shocks due to the stainless steel case, but at 76 grams, it remains comfortable for everyday wear.
Traditional Movement with Upgraded Backlight
Unlike other modern G-Shocks that feature advanced technologies like solar power or Bluetooth, the DW5000R-1A uses the traditional Module 3576 digital quartz movement. Powered by a CR2016 battery, it offers a five-year battery life and includes basic features like a stopwatch, alarm, and automatic calendar. The watch also boasts a brighter, white LED backlight for improved visibility in low-light conditions.
Made in Japan: Craftsmanship and Heritage
The G-Shock DW5000R-1A Origin Revival is proudly manufactured at Casio’s Yamagata factory in Japan, where the original model was produced. With a retail price of $200, it offers collectors a chance to own a piece of G-Shock history while enjoying modern improvements like the upgraded backlight. For fans of the brand, this revival is a true homage to the pioneering watch that started it all.
