A Vintage Find Reimagined
Although Nivada Grenchen has expanded into numerous niches in recent years, the brand arguably performs best when it recreates the thrill of stumbling upon a forgotten vintage piece tucked away in a watch shop display. Few competitors pair colorful, quirky ’60s and ’70s aesthetics with contemporary build quality and reliability as well, and the new Chronoking Black Amber shows this talent clearly. Its funky ’70s chronograph design comes with quick-swap bezels that offer five distinct looks in a single watch.
Case Design and Interchangeable Bezels
The 38mm stainless steel case, shared across the Chronoking family, carries a bold retro sporting attitude. Vertically brushed lug tops contrast with broad polished chamfers. This adds sculpted dimension and visually breaks up the 13.4mm thickness, which can feel slightly weighty given the compact diameter but reinforces the period vibe. The true star, however, is the tool-free click-to-fit bezel system. Five split world time and minutes bezels are included, four in sapphire and one in aluminum, and each can be swapped in seconds. The deep orange sapphire option pairs most naturally with the dial, while the orange and black aluminum insert feels the most overtly vintage. The black-and-white and gray-and-black versions trade color for contrast, and the purple, black, and pale blue bezel serves as the daring wild card. A solid embossed caseback and 100 meters of water resistance round out the package.
Dial Details and Movement
The matte black dial features gold azurage subdials with “Paul Newman”-style scales and polished rings. A thick orange chronograph hand, simple black baton hands, and warm fauxtina lume keep the look approachable. A deep mahogany-brown seconds ring evokes the patina of a decades-old dial. Inside sits the Seiko VK63 meca-quartz movement, rated at +20/-20 seconds per month with roughly three years of power reserve and crisp pusher action. Its 6 o’clock running seconds and 3 o’clock 24-hour subdial slightly undermine the mechanical illusion. Still, a true mechanical caliber would have at least doubled the price.
Strap Options, Pricing, and Verdict
Buyers can choose a pigskin-style black leather rally strap or a stainless steel beads of rice bracelet. The bracelet’s unusually long polished center links create dramatic highlights on the wrist, and a signed two-button folding clasp completes it. By distilling the brand’s philosophy into an approachable, customizable package, the Chronoking Black Amber feels like an undiscovered vintage gem that is far easier to live with every day. It is available now through authorized dealers for $810 USD.
