A Champion’s Enduring Legacy
In 1961, while many watchmakers focused on scuba diving, Edox drew inspiration from a different aquatic feat: the fearless cliff divers of Acapulco’s La Quebrada. To survive their 100-foot plunges into the Pacific, these athletes needed an exceptionally durable timepiece. The result was the Edox Delfin, a watch so robust it earned the moniker “the Water Champion.” This pivotal moment in the brand’s history, which dates back to 1884, is now being celebrated with new releases. As one of the few remaining family-owned Swiss watch brands, Edox is honoring its past by launching a faithful re-edition of the original 1961 Delfin alongside a new collection inspired by its bold 1973 successor, blending heritage with modern craftsmanship.
The Refined 1961 Re-Edition
In contrast to the utilitarian dive watches of its time, the original Delfin exuded a quiet confidence with its sophisticated design. The new Delfin 1961 – Date Automatic Limited Edition meticulously recreates this elegant aesthetic. Housed in a 41mm cushion case, it features a clean dial with Super-LumiNova hands, a domed sapphire crystal, and maintains an impressive 200m of water resistance. The timepiece is powered by the reliable Edox Calibre 80 (Sellita SW200) automatic movement. Limited to just 265 pieces per dial color (timeless black or elegant cream), each watch includes both an era-appropriate flat-link bracelet and an additional leather strap, offering versatile style for its CHF 1,495 price point.
The Rebellious Spirit of 1973
If the 1961 model was understated, the 1973 Delfin was its audacious counterpart. The new Delfin 1973 collection channels this rebellious spirit rather than being a direct reissue. It retains the iconic 12-sided bezel but introduces a new case and a novel textured dial. This distinctive finish is achieved by repeatedly striking the brass dial base with a linear tool, creating a horizontal relief pattern meant to evoke the rippling sands of the seabed. The Delfin Automatic (ref. 80142), the line’s spiritual successor, features a 41mm case and the Caliber 80 movement, with prices starting at an accessible CHF 950.
A Versatile Modern Collection
Expanding on the 1973 design, Edox offers a full range of models to suit diverse tastes. The collection includes the 43mm Delfin Chronograph (ref. 10118), a quartz model with a starting price of CHF 750. For those preferring quartz three-hand movements, the Delfin Date – Gents (ref 53032) offers the same 41mm case and mesmerizing dial, while the Delfin Date – Ladies (ref. 50504) provides a more compact 32mm option. Both quartz date models start at CHF 595. Every watch in the new Delfin line upholds the Water Champion legacy with 200m of water resistance, ensuring that this legendary design is ready for any adventure.
