Grand Seiko’s admiration for Mount Iwate seems to know no bounds. Since 2006, the iconic Japanese mountain—an active volcano—has served as inspiration for numerous Grand Seiko timepieces. Now, in 2025, Grand Seiko introduces the SLGH027, a Hi-Beat 36000 watch that joins the Evolution 9 collection with a mesmerizing pale blue dial reminiscent of Mount Iwate’s peaks.

A Familiar Yet Unique Design
At its core, the Grand Seiko SLGH027 is a dial variation of the “White Birch” SLGH005 and “Genbi Valley” SLGH021 models. As with other Evolution 9 watches, it adheres to Grand Seiko’s “Grammar of Design” philosophy, first introduced in 1967. The case remains 40mm in diameter and 11.7mm thick, crafted from Ever-Brilliant Steel—a highly corrosion-resistant alloy with a Pitting Resistance Equivalent Number (PREN) 1.7 times greater than standard stainless steel. The case features a 100-meter water resistance rating, a box-shaped sapphire crystal, and a display caseback, while Grand Seiko’s signature Zaratsu polishing ensures a distortion-free mirror finish.
A Dial Inspired by Nature
What sets the SLGH027 apart is its striking pale blue radial-textured dial, inspired by an aerial view of Mount Iwate’s ridges. The color symbolizes the purity of the mountain’s air and water, with a darker blue seconds hand and dial text enhancing contrast. The dial layout remains consistent with other Evolution 9 Hi-Beat models, featuring finely finished hour markers, dauphine-shaped hands, and a framed date window at 3 o’clock—yet omitting any luminous material.
Precision and Performance
Under the hood, the SLGH027 houses the Caliber 9SA5 automatic movement, running at 36,000 vibrations per hour (5 Hz) with an impressive 80-hour power reserve. Featuring a twin-barrel design and Grand Seiko’s Dual Impulse Escapement, the movement boasts an accuracy rating of -3/+5 seconds per day—surpassing Swiss chronometer standards. It also offers 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance and includes 47 jewels for enhanced durability.
Bracelet and Pricing
The bracelet, measuring 22mm at the lugs, follows the design of other Evolution 9 models, featuring a multi-link construction, a push-button folding clasp with titanium components, and an 18k gold emblem. Priced at $10,500, the SLGH027 sits above earlier stainless steel models but matches the cost of Evolution 9 watches made from High Intensity Titanium.
A Collector’s Conundrum
Grand Seiko continues to offer multiple Mount Iwate-inspired timepieces, including a titanium model with a wintery blue dial. While the brand’s dedication to this theme is notable, it does present a challenge for collectors: which Mount Iwate edition to choose? With only 1,200 pieces available, the SLGH027 will be a coveted addition for those who appreciate Grand Seiko’s craftsmanship and nature-inspired artistry.
