Revamping Vintage: The Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon for 2025

January 2nd 2025

Longines, known for its steady stream of impressive releases, has often been regarded as a dark horse in the watch enthusiast community. For 2025, the brand takes a bold step towards modernity with the Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon, blending vintage aesthetics with cutting-edge materials and a moody, futuristic flair. This timepiece marks Longines’ first foray into carbon case construction and redefines its ‘60s-era Ultra-Chron silhouette.

Innovative Carbon Case Construction

At 43mm wide, the cushion-shaped case is a familiar silhouette from the standard Ultra-Chron, but the matte carbon fiber construction sets it apart. Longines employs a layered combination of unidirectional carbon fiber and epoxy resin, producing smooth, flowing black and gray striations that highlight the case’s linear surfaces and chamfers. Flat areas, like the upper case and caseback, feature a dynamic flake texture for a futuristic touch. The titanium bezel, fixed with a matte black aluminum insert, replaces the rotating bezel of previous models, giving the design a streamlined, minimalist aesthetic.

Monochrome Dial with Striking Details

The dial delivers a stark black-and-white palette, trading the standard Ultra-Chron’s khaki and red accents for a stealthier look. Charcoal gray PVD-coated hands and indices contrast against bright white lume, ensuring legibility. The outer seconds scale and blacked-out Ultra-Chron logo at 6 o’clock add subtle depth, though the overall design may feel sterile to some.

Performance and Precision

The L836.6 automatic movement, developed by ETA for Longines, offers high-frequency precision at 36,000 bph, a silicon balance spring, and a 52-hour power reserve. TIMELAB chronometer certification underscores its accuracy, making it a formidable contender in its price range.

Finishing Touches

A woven black fabric strap with a titanium buckle complements the modern aesthetic, while its versatility invites experimentation with aftermarket options like rubber or NATO straps.

With an MSRP of $4,900 USD, the Longines Ultra-Chron Carbon is a bold step forward, promising to elevate the brand’s standing among watch enthusiasts in 2025.
