Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Series Urushi Lacquer Dial SPB447

Seiko’s pricing is currently in a transitional phase, with its watches’ positions in the brand’s lineup primarily informed by the type of movement used. However, other aspects of Seiko’s recent releases can feel somewhat unpredictable. One of its latest 2024 models, the Seiko Presage Craftsmanship Series Urushi Lacquer Dial SPB447, is a notable example. Offering a GMT complication with a handcrafted lacquer dial, it comes in at nearly half the price of Seiko’s King Seiko models.

Case Design and Features

The Seiko Presage SPB447 features a case made of brushed and polished stainless steel with Seiko’s Super Hard Coating. Measuring 40.2mm in diameter and 12.4mm in thickness, it has a lug width of 20mm and a lug-to-lug distance of 48mm. The watch’s front includes a fixed bezel and a dual-curved sapphire crystal with anti-reflective coating on the inside. The crown is located at 3 o’clock, and the caseback features a screw-down display, allowing a view of the internal movement. Despite its dressy look, the SPB447 boasts a 100-meter water resistance and magnetic resistance up to 4,800 A/m, with a total weight of about 87 grams.

Dial and Craftsmanship

The dial is a standout feature, created under the guidance of Japanese lacquer artist Isshu Tamura. The glossy black surface is produced by layering and polishing multiple coats of Urushi lacquer. The dial includes baton-shaped hour markers, a date window at 3 o’clock, and a gold 24-hour scale on the periphery. The hour and minute hands have polished finishes, while the GMT and seconds hands are in gold, complementing the 24-hour scale and GMT text. True to its elegant design, the SPB447 omits luminous material.

Movement and Performance

The SPB447 is powered by Seiko’s Caliber 6R54 automatic GMT movement. This “caller” GMT allows independent adjustment of the 24-hour hand and date. Operating at 21,600 vibrations per hour (3 Hz), the movement offers a power reserve of 72 hours. Although less accurate than the King Seiko’s 6Lxx movements, it compensates with its longer autonomy.

Strap and Sustainability

The watch is fitted with a dark brown calfskin leather strap, featuring gold contrast stitching. The leather is responsibly sourced from a tannery certified by the Leather Working Group. Completing the look is a triple-folding deployant clasp with a push-button release, enhancing both comfort and elegance.
