TAG Heuer’s High-End Watches: The Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph

August 22nd 2024

Over the past two decades, TAG Heuer has introduced several high-end specialty watches alongside its more mainstream luxury timepieces. These exclusive models, priced over $100,000, push the boundaries of design and technology. In 2024, TAG Heuer redefined its top-tier product line under new leadership, focusing on a more artistic and architectural approach while maintaining a strong connection to the brand’s timing heritage.

The Brain Behind the Movement: Carole Kasapi and Vaucher

A significant aspect of the new TAG Heuer Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph collection is the innovative movement designed by TAG Heuer’s movement engineer, Carole Kasapi, and produced by Swiss movement specialist Vaucher. While TAG Heuer could have produced the movement in-house, outsourcing to Vaucher allowed for greater efficiency and cost-effectiveness. This collaboration resulted in a high-quality yet reasonably priced timepiece within the luxury market.

Monaco’s Iconic Design with a Futuristic Twist

The Monaco case, one of TAG Heuer’s most iconic designs, takes on a futuristic look in the new Split-Seconds Chronograph. Rendered in titanium, the case features a mixture of restraint and novel shapes, with the clear sapphire crystal caseback being a standout feature. This design evolution echoes TAG Heuer’s earlier Monaco V4 collection from the early 2000s but with modern enhancements and a fresh perspective.

Two Versions of the Split-Seconds Chronograph

At launch, TAG Heuer introduced two versions of the Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph. The CBW2181.FC8322 features a black DLC-coated titanium case with red accents, while the CBW2182.FC8339 showcases a natural titanium case with blue accents, reminiscent of the original Monaco model from 1969. Both watches boast a 41mm case, 30-meter water resistance, and an impressively lightweight automatic chronograph movement, the TAG Heuer caliber TH81-00, produced by Vaucher.

A Sensible Yet Exotic Watch

Despite its exotic nature, the Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph is practical enough for regular wear. The fabric-style strap with a folding titanium deployant clasp ensures comfort and durability. The movement’s innovative design, combined with its sensible utility, makes this watch a standout in TAG Heuer’s collection.

A Bright Future for TAG Heuer’s High-End Creations

TAG Heuer’s Monaco Split-Seconds Chronograph is not a limited edition but will be produced in small, numbered series. This avant-garde watch reflects the creativity and resourcefulness of Carole Kasapi and her team, promising more exciting developments for enthusiasts in the future. Priced at $138,000 USD, this watch offers a glimpse into TAG Heuer’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of watchmaking while staying true to its heritage.
