The Evolution of Citizen’s Bullhead Chronographs

In January 1973, Citizen made waves in the watch world by releasing its first bullhead chronograph models. These distinctive timepieces, affectionately known as “Tsuno,” gained popularity thanks to the unique placement of their crowns and pushers on the 12 o’clock side of the case. Fast forward to 2024, Citizen has once again reimagined this quirky favorite with the launch of the limited-edition Citizen Promaster Tsuno Chrono Racer AV0088-01L. This new release blends modern technology with the iconic bullhead design, creating a timepiece that pays homage to the past while embracing the future.

A Modern Twist on a Classic Design

Unlike the 50th-anniversary “Tsuno Chrono” bullhead model, which featured a gold-tone stainless steel case, the new Citizen Promaster Tsuno Chrono Racer AV0088-01L is crafted from Citizen’s proprietary Super Titanium alloy. This material not only enhances durability but also gives the watch a noticeably more angular profile. The 43.3mm case is complemented by a flat anti-reflective sapphire crystal and a solid screw-down caseback, ensuring the watch is protected from any environmental challenges. With an impressive 200 meters of water resistance, this timepiece is built to withstand a variety of aquatic conditions.

A Dial Inspired by Motorsport

The dial of the Citizen Promaster Tsuno Chrono Racer AV0088-01L is a visual treat, drawing inspiration from the dashboard of a car. The bright blue dial, accented by black sub-dials and red hands, creates a motorsport-themed aesthetic. The 60-minute chronograph counter at 12 o’clock resembles a speedometer, while the power reserve indicator at 9 o’clock mimics a fuel gauge. The dial is completed with a black tachymeter scale surrounding its periphery, adding both functionality and style.

High-Performance Movement

Inside the Citizen Promaster Tsuno Chrono Racer AV0088-01L beats the brand’s light-powered Caliber E210 Eco-Drive movement. Hand-assembled with 11 jewels, this meca-quartz flyback chronograph offers a programmable alarm and an accuracy rating of +/-15 seconds per month. Although it lacks some of the features found in Citizen’s other premium Eco-Drive movements, such as radio-controlled timekeeping, it remains a reliable and high-performing caliber with an eight-month autonomous run-time once fully charged.

Limited Edition and Pricing

The Citizen Promaster Tsuno Chrono Racer AV0088-01L is a limited edition of just 2,500 pieces, making it a highly sought-after model for enthusiasts. Despite its advanced features and the use of Super Titanium, the watch is priced at $1,195 USD, the same as the 50th-anniversary model from last year. This combination of premium craftsmanship and nostalgic design solidifies the Tsuno Chrono Racer as one of Citizen’s most enthusiast-driven pieces.
