In 2020, Breitling reimagined its Chronomat collection, opting for a streamlined, 1980s-inspired look. This makeover introduced a flatter bezel, straighter lugs, and the signature Rouleaux bracelet. Fast forward to 2024, and Breitling has unveiled its first-ever 28mm Chronomat, marking a new direction for the collection’s “sports-chic” aesthetic. The initial lineup includes four distinct models: three in stainless steel and one in a two-tone finish, each featuring lab-grown diamonds, a mother-of-pearl dial, and a thermo-compensated quartz movement.
Compact Design with Iconic Features
At just 28mm in diameter, the Chronomat 28 is Breitling’s smallest watch in the collection to date. It stands at 8.46mm thick, with a case length of 34.6mm, providing a refined yet durable option for smaller wrists. Despite the reduced size, it retains signature Chronomat elements: an onion-shaped crown with dual gaskets for 100 meters of water resistance, a cambered sapphire crystal, and the classic “rider tab” bezel. The tabs on gem-set models are adorned with brilliant-cut diamonds, while those on plain bezels feature a subtle brushed finish, offering a balance between elegance and functionality.
Elegant Rouleaux Bracelet and Dial Options
The 28mm model continues to feature Breitling’s Rouleaux bracelet, introduced with the 2020 redesign. The bracelet’s polished mid-links and seamless butterfly clasp give it a refined finish, enhancing the watch’s sleek appearance. The lineup’s dials include a range of mother-of-pearl shades: white (ref. U72310531A1U1) for the two-tone model, black (ref. A72310531G1A1) for the stainless steel with diamond bezel, and pastel blue or pink (ref. A72310101C1A1 and A72310101K1A1) for the stainless steel versions. All dials include Super-LumiNova-filled hands, a 60-minute rehaut, and diamond hour markers.
Precision and Sustainability
Inside the Chronomat 28 is the Breitling 72 SuperQuartz™ movement, a thermo-compensated caliber that ensures superior accuracy, boasting COSC certification. As part of Breitling’s commitment to sustainability, these models use lab-grown diamonds, aligning with the brand’s “Origins label” for traceable, ethical sourcing.
Pricing and Availability
Breitling’s Chronomat 28 is now available online and in boutiques. Pricing ranges from $4,800 for the stainless steel models without diamonds to $7,000 for the diamond bezel model, and $10,250 for the two-tone option. For those looking for more variety, future additions may include non-diamond dials, similar to the Chronomat 32.
