To commemorate G-SHOCK’s 40th anniversary, Casio utilized AI to analyze four decades of design data, generating a 3D model optimized for structural strength and material efficiency. This model served as the foundation for the G-D001, blending technological innovation with traditional craftsmanship.
Exquisite Craftsmanship and Unprecedented Design
The G-D001 boasts a full-metal, shock-resistant structure crafted entirely from 18-karat yellow gold, eliminating the need for resin buffering. The bezel and strap were produced using a lost-wax casting process, a technique commonly found in jewelry making, and then hand-polished to achieve a brilliant luster. The watch features an organic, see-through dial-less design, showcasing its intricate internal mechanisms, including a metal main plate, silicone cogwheels, and ruby bearings. A gallium-based solar cell, akin to those used in satellites, powers the timepiece, highlighting Casio’s commitment to innovation.
Record-Breaking Auction and Philanthropic Impact
Initially estimated to sell between $70,000 and $140,000, the G-D001 surpassed expectations by fetching $400,050 at a Phillips auction in New York, setting a world record for a Casio watch. All proceeds from the sale were donated to The Nature Conservancy, underscoring Casio’s dedication to environmental causes.
