Bell & Ross BR-03 Horizon: Aviation-Inspired Mastery

September 17th 2024

Bell & Ross is renowned for its aviation-inspired watches, and while the BR-05 has gained considerable attention, their Instrument series truly represents the brand’s core. These square watches draw direct inspiration from cockpit instrument panels, and within this collection, Bell & Ross has released various limited-edition Flight Instrument watches. Each of these editions transforms the ordinary watch dial into a visual tribute to a specific flight instrument. There have been 14 prior Flight Instrument models, including dials based on a compass, HUD, radar, radio compass, and gyrocompass. Following their annual release pattern since 2019, Bell & Ross introduces the BR-03 Horizon for 2024, modeled after an attitude indicator.

Design & Case Details

The BR-03 Horizon retains the signature case of the BR-03 automatic series, which was reduced from 42mm to 41mm last year. At 10.6mm thick, the case is made from matte black ceramic, offering a tactical and robust aesthetic—a hallmark of the brand. It features a knurled crown, a flat sapphire crystal, and a 100m water resistance rating. The watch comes with a black rubber strap, designed to flare out to meet the outer edge of the lugs, providing comfort on the wrist. Additionally, a bright orange Velcro strap is included, though it may not be as comfortable for all wearers.

Exciting Dial Configuration

The BR-03 Horizon’s dial is where the watch truly stands out. Inspired by the artificial horizon seen on attitude indicators, the rotating dial is divided into a sky-blue upper half and a black lower half, with pitch indicator lines. The fixed plane’s wings and fuselage in orange and black add to the aviation theme. Hours are indicated by a black arrow, minutes by a white hand, and seconds by a full-width striped hand. The Super-LumiNova accents on the minute hand and lumed sky provide excellent legibility in all lighting conditions.

Movement & Performance

Powered by the BR-CAL.327, based on the reliable Sellita SW300-1, the BR-03 Horizon offers a 54-hour power reserve at 28,800 vph. This movement ensures a thinner case and enhanced durability, making it a go-to choice for Bell & Ross three-handers.

Conclusion

The BR-03 Horizon is a standout in the Flight Instrument series, offering a balance of creativity and legibility. With its bold blue and orange accents, it brings a fresh and exciting twist to the Bell & Ross lineup. Limited to just 999 pieces and priced at $4,500 USD, it’s a striking blend of function and aviation-inspired design.
